Discussion:
How does one access Usenet from Safari?

Just got one of the mini Macs, and it's my first serious
exposure to OSX. I'm using Safari on the web just to
see how it goes, and it's great, except there doesn't
seem to be a way to access Usenet. Thoughts? Advice?
Thanks in advance.

Well you managed to post from a Macintosh version of Outlook Express, so
you seem to be on the internet.

What's your network setup on this mini-Mac? Dial-up or broadband? How
do you have the networking configured?

Safari is a Web browser (http client) -- it doesn't do email (pop3,
imap, smtp) or newsgroups (nntp).

You can access newsgroups using any of a number of nntp client
applications: MT-Newswatcher, Unison, Hogwasher, MacSoup, and so on --
do a search for "Usenet" in the OS X area on Version Tracker. If you
want an integrated browser, email, and news client, your best bet is
Mozilla 1.7.7.

I think the OP is an old timer on net... Back in the days, browsers had
simple nntp functionality ;)

Somewhat of an old-timer. And I'm definitely *not* a serious techie,
to the consternation to my high end programmer friends here in SV.

I'm doing this currently on OE on my old G3, but I really hate the
idea of micro$oft products on my machine. So the new mini-Mac will
remain evil empire free forever. The consensus seems to be with
Mozilla, so I will try that. Thanks to all for the feedback.

And MT Newswatcher. , be sure to try that too.

I ended up purchasing Unison since it fits my current style, simplicity.

Safari isn't a Usenet client. You can read Usenet with Safari by going
to Google Groups if you really want to otherwise find a Usenet client
you like. Look at what other people are posting with or look here for
some options:
<http://www.newsreaders.com/mac/clients.html>

or you could stick with OE. Choices, choices, choices! :-)

Go to usenet directly, don't bother with the web. I use a very cheap
($15??) shareware program called UNISON: http://www.panic.com/unison/

There's a whole lot of news readers available, using MT Newswatcher
myself (free).

But it will miss all messages with "x-no-archive: yes" headers (or on

That's a Google bug that should be reported by GN lusers.

YMMV

Why is it a bug? that's what it is for--so google groups doesn't pick
it up and store it.

Actually such messages are displayed for a limited length of time on
Google Groups -- I think it is six days.

That must be a fairly recent change in Google Groups in that case.

Yep, its seven days and started when they released their -beta version
back in December. They actually seem to honor it.

Only after seven days, unless someone else quotes it.
